Can AI build a good website for my business?

“Can I just use AI to build my website?”. It's a question more and more business owners are asking - and it's a fair question! AI website builders have come a long way. You can now describe your business, answer a few questions and have an AI tool generate a website layout, write content and create pages in a remarkably short amount of time.

There's an important difference however, between AI being able to build a website, and AI being able to build the right website for your business.

So, if AI can build a website in minutes, do you still need a web designer?

Let’s give AI credit where it’s due - it can build a website

Yes, AI website builders are genuinely useful - we don’t have our heads in the sand. Any designer that tells you otherwise is in denial (or not up to date with the latest technology). AI website builders can help create:

  • Website structures

  • Page layouts

  • Basic website copy

  • Calls to action

  • Images and visual concepts

  • Landing pages

  • Mobile-friendly layouts

  • Basic business websites

For a new business that needs a simple online presence quickly, this is a very attractive option. AI can dramatically reduce the amount of time and technical knowledge needed to get something online, and it is a very cheap option.

But “it works” and “it's good” aren't necessarily the same thing.

We need to ask: is it a good website… and good for what?

Imagine asking an AI: “Build me a website for a professional services business.” It will probably produce something that looks professional with a few pages and it may even produce some impressive-looking copy and images.

But does it understand:

  • Why your customers choose you?

  • What makes you different from your competitors?

  • What information your customers need before contacting you?

  • Which services are most important to your business?

  • What action you want visitors to take?

  • How your sales process works?

  • What objections potential customers have?

  • How your website fits into your wider marketing?

  • What your brand should feel like?

  • Which pages actually need to exist?

And this is where the difference between website generation and website strategy becomes important.

A website is more than just a collection of pretty pages

A good website has a job to do. It might be designed to generate enquiries, sell products, encourage bookings, build credibility, explain a complex service or support a sales process. Every page should contribute to that purpose and the layout, navigation, content, imagery, calls to action and user journey should work together.

AI can help generate these elements, but someone still needs to make the decisions about why they are there and whether they actually work for your customers.

That's where human input remains valuable.

Key considerations if you want to build a website with AI

Ownership & Control

  • Who owns the website, design, content and domain?

  • Can I move the website to another provider or have another designer take it over?

Hosting & Costs

  • Where is the website hosted and who controls the hosting account?

  • What happens to my website if I cancel or stop paying the platform?

Mailing Lists & Leads

  • Can enquiry forms connect to my mailing list, CRM or email marketing platform?

  • Where are customer enquiries and subscriber details stored?

SEO & Google

  • Can I control page titles, URLs, meta descriptions and other SEO settings?

  • If I'm replacing an existing website, how will my current Google rankings and URLs be protected?

Analytics & Tracking

  • Can I connect Google Analytics, Search Console and other tracking tools?

  • Do I own and control the accounts and data?

Content & Credibility

  • Who owns the website copy and images, and can I edit them myself?

  • Has the AI-generated content been reviewed for accuracy, originality and relevance to my business?

  • If my content is flagged as AI generated then will that harm the credibility of my business? Anthropic rolled out a new invisible watermarking policy to satisfy the EU AI Act’s Transparency Code, which now requires tech companies to label content that has been AI-generated or edited in a manner identifiable to computer systems.

Mobile & Accessibility

  • Does the website work properly across mobile, desktop and different browsers?

  • Has it been checked for accessibility and usability?

Security & Privacy

  • How is customer data collected, stored and protected?

  • Are backups, SSL security and updates handled automatically?

Integrations

  • Can it connect with the tools my business already uses, such as CRM, email marketing or booking systems?

  • What happens if I need an integration that the platform doesn't support?

Future-Proofing

  • What happens if I want to change platforms or redesign the website in the future?

  • Will I still have access to my website and its content if the AI platform changes, increases its prices or shuts down?

So, should you use AI to build your website?

I’m afraid we don’t have a black and white answer - it’s not a simple ‘no’ which may shock many of you…

Use AI… to explore ideas, speed up repetitive tasks, experiment with layout and content.

But don’t… confuse the ability to generate a website with the ability to understand your business.

The best approach is a hybrid of human and AI - utilising the right tools for the job. AI doesn't have to be the enemy of good web design, in fact, it can be a very useful part of the process.

  1. AI can help with speed and efficiency.

  2. A designer can bring judgement, creative thinking, brand understanding and a human perspective.

  3. And ongoing website support can make sure the website doesn't simply get launched and forgotten.

It isn’t a case of AI vs. designer, it’s simply a case of using each one at the right stage in the process (and yes we can help make sure that AI output is doing what it should - learn more about our website design services).

Final thoughts

So, can AI build a good website for your business? Yes - but the better question is whether it can build the right website for your business. AI is an excellent tool for speeding up design, content and development, but it can’t replace the strategic thinking that turns a website into a genuine business asset. The strongest results come from combining AI’s efficiency with human insight, ensuring your website not only looks great, but also attracts the right customers and supports your long-term goals.
